Biding Time is a global theatre concept created by Australian festival darling Pippa Bailey. A new concept in theatre designed to challenge the way our society is organised around money making enterprises, Biding Time presents the challenge of creating a new consensual reality through inclusive theatre – one that raises the stakes of women at the same time as encouraging a breakthrough in the way the world works and is perceived. Pippa was appointed a Libertine 100 – a group of special women whose ideas could change the world, and her work at the festival in Dubbo was certainly a beacon of encouragement for the work women are capable of.
The play is open to being interpreted in many ways, across many forms of media, with a central story theme that been reinterpreted around the world.
When Sam Paine was commissioned by Artlands 2016 to write an interpretation of the play, he invited local band Honey to be a part of his odyssey. Creating a range of new material to intersperse into the play, along with a range of incidental music to emphasise theatrical moments and dramatic tension, the band played live on stage as characters in the play.
With ongoing dialogue and visual references to the Wizard of Oz throughout Sam’s interpretation, the band’s dog “Prints” made a cameo appearance throughout the staging as “Toto”.
Featuring excellent performances from comedic charachter actress Jude Bowler and Mudgee’s favourite theatrical duo Esther Wilson and Sam Paine, the play was a festival favourite this year.
